How each platform approaches document management
Nuxeo
Nuxeo is Hyland's cloud-native enterprise content management (ECM) and digital asset management (DAM) platform. It excels at high-volume, complex content repositories (particularly for rich media, 3D assets, and creative workflows) and scales to tens of billions of assets.
Alfresco
Alfresco is Hyland's open-standards ECM platform, originally open source. It is strongest in information governance and records management, supports CMIS 1.1 for broad interoperability, and integrates tightly with Microsoft 365 and Google Docs.
OnBase
OnBase is Hyland's flagship ECM with deep roots in case management, process automation, and records management. It has the longest track record in regulated industries such as healthcare, insurance, and government.

Intelligent document processing
Hyland offers intelligent document processing (IDP) as a separate product within its Content Innovation Cloud (CIC). It uses select large language models to recognize text, classify documents, extract data, and enrich content with metadata. Customers using Nuxeo, Alfresco, or OnBase need to license and configure Hyland IDP separately.
Vertesia includes intelligent document processing as a core feature. Every document entering the platform is automatically processed through an intake pipeline that classifies, extracts, and enriches content. No separate product or configuration required.
Search and retrieval
Nuxeo's Elasticsearch-powered search with NXQL gives developers a powerful, SQL-like query language for precise repository queries. Alfresco's Solr-powered search supports CMIS queries and full-text search across the content store. OnBase uses keyword-index and full-text search, which is efficient for known retrieval patterns.
Vertesia uses three search modes simultaneously in a single pass: full-text (keyword), semantic search, and filter by structured metadata with a built-in vector database to return answers with sources rather than a list of matching files. All results respect the requester's access permissions.
AI capabilities and model flexibility
Nuxeo Insight is a proprietary, trainable AI engine. Alfresco and OnBase rely on Hyland IDP for generative AI features. None of the three Hyland platforms supports plugging in external AI models without custom development.
Vertesia is model-agnostic, supporting over 100 generative AI models including OpenAI's GPT series, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, and others through a virtualized model routing layer. You can switch AI providers or use different models for different tasks without rebuilding workflows, and your documents are never used to train public AI models.
Metadata management
All three Hyland products support metadata through a mix of manual tagging, automated capture, and AI enrichment. Alfresco and Nuxeo include AI-based metadata extraction, and Hyland IDP can enrich documents with contextual metadata during capture.
Vertesia uses Semantic DocPrep to transform unstructured documents into richly structured, semantically tagged content that is ready for AI processing. Metadata is generated automatically during ingestion, and every document carries full audit metadata covering version history, approvals, and lineage. This approach reduces the manual effort required to prepare content for search and AI use.
App and agent building
None of Hyland's products enable their customers to build and deploy custom AI applications, AI agents, or agentic workflows.
Vertesia offers a no-code/low-code workspace where teams can design, test, and deploy AI agents, build custom apps, and durable workflows. This workspace supports the full development lifecycle, from prompt design to production deployment, with versioning and promotion controls built in. Agents built in the workspace can be connected to enterprise systems through pre-built connectors, MCP or REST APIs.
Deployment and hosting
Nuxeo Cloud runs on Hyland-managed AWS infrastructure, with Azure support being added through a new Microsoft partnership announced in June 2026. Alfresco is available on AWS Marketplace and can be self-hosted in containers. OnBase runs in Hyland's own proprietary data centers (not on AWS, Azure, or GCP), with an option to self-deploy on a public cloud of your choice. None of the three Hyland products publicly document a "deploy into your VPC" option for their managed cloud service.
Vertesia supports deployment on AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure as managed SaaS, plus private cloud and on-premises options.
Process engine capabilities
Alfresco
Alfresco Process Services is a full business process management suite built on Activiti, an open-source BPMN 2.0 engine. It supports human tasks, timers, parallel and exclusive gateways, sub-processes, service tasks, and REST integrations. Processes can be designed graphically in a BPMN editor or with a simplified step editor for non-technical users. Organizations with existing BPMN process libraries or tooling will find Alfresco the easiest to work with.
Nuxeo
Nuxeo centers its process capabilities on automation chains and event-driven listeners rather than classic BPMN. Documents move through lifecycle states, and automation chains trigger on events such as document creation or state change. Human workflow tasks with routing and approvals are supported. Configuration requires developer skills in Java and Nuxeo's OSGi plugin architecture, which has a steep learning curve.
OnBase
OnBase uses a proprietary, queue-based lifecycle engine that is purpose-built for document-centric routing. Documents are assigned to Life Cycles containing Queues (stages) that they move through based on rules, actions, and conditions. Customizable forms handle human input; exception routing and automated rules are deeply configurable, however it is not BPMN-based, which limits portability.
